Protecting Your Mental Health as a Journalist

Journalism can be a brilliant job, but tight deadlines, difficult stories, long hours and constant exposure to distressing material can all take their toll.

Join BBC broadcaster, NHS counselling psychologist and best-selling author of  ‘The Power of Anxiety: How to Ride the Worry Wave’ Dr Sian Williams for a practical session on how to recognise when stress is becoming a problem and what you can do about it.

Journalist Rosemary Griffin will host the conversation, drawing on her own experience of covering major stories including the war in Ukraine. She’ll ask Sian how stress affects us, which warning signs to look out for and what journalists can do when work starts to feel overwhelming.

They’ll also look at how editors, managers and colleagues can better support journalists before, during and after difficult assignments.

During the session you’ll learn:

  • How to recognise the signs of stress, including changes in mood, behaviour, sleep and thinking
  • Practical ways to manage stress and protect your mental health when work becomes overwhelming
  • How editors, managers and colleagues can support journalists before, during and after difficult assignments

This session is free for all journalists and you do not have to be a member of Women in Journalism to sign up.
