How to pitch features and profiles to The New Statesman

Women in Journalism is launching an exciting new lunchtime series for freelance journalists with the award-winning freelance journalist, Donna Ferguson.

Last month Women in Journalism launched a new lunchtime series for freelance journalists.

We want to help freelance journalists who don’t have a lot of contacts in the industry and are hoping to cold pitch an editor and potentially get their first byline in national newspapers and magazines. But experienced freelancers are also very welcome too.

Throughout the series, Women in Journalism is inviting top editors who regularly commission articles from freelancers they don’t know to talk to us about their regular slots and opportunities for freelancers, and explain how to write the best possible pitch for their section. Each session will last for 30 minutes and include time for questions and answers.

The April session will be with Donna Ferguson and Emily Lawford, online editor at the New Statesman.

It will take place on Tuesday 28th April, 12.30pm (GMT) online.

About the speakers

Donna Ferguson is a multiple award-winning freelance journalist for national newspapers and Head of the Freelance Chapter for Women in Journalism, a nonprofit organisation that campaigns for equality and diversity in journalism.

Emily Lawford is online editor at the New Statesman. She was previously commissioning editor at Prospect magazine, where she worked for nearly five years. She edits a mix of politics and culture for the NS website and writes across all sections.

She commissions reported features and profiles of interesting people on any topic and  online-only culture analysis: this could be essays pegged to films, books etc, or features about wider societal trends. She also commissions online-only book reviews.

Read the Weekend Report, Weekend Interview and Weekend Essay sections of the NS website to have a feel for the things she commissions. She also recommends looking at New Society section of the mag and website.

Recordings will be sent to those who purchase a ticket. Experienced freelancers, men and non-binary people are welcome.
