Student Committee
Student Women in Journalism (SWIJ) is a new division of the main Women in Journalism (WIJ) association. We are a campaigning, networking and training organisation aimed to support budding journalists hoping to break into the industry.
Based in London, we hold regular seminars, workshops and open debates covering all aspects of journalism from print to broadcast and new media. We throw parties that enable students to network with editors and writers and potentially line up work experience or even a job.
We could help kick-start your career in the media and support you through the daunting transition from graduate to employee. We cover many important issues including unpaid work experience, how to conduct an interview, how to get ahead in the industry, negotiate a good rate for a freelance article and build confidence.
We find experts in the media to answer your questions and allow you access to working women in journalism who will offer advice and encouragement. The main WIJ group has been around for over 12 years and although SWIJ are a new organisation, we are brimming with ideas to offer you.Â
Our enthusiastic and helpful committee members are familiar with the process you are going through as we are students and graduates ourselves. Our main aim is to provide new women journalists with a foundation to launch their career and help them reach their potential in the industry through career advice, training and moral support.
